Thursday 22nd October

There appears to be no correlation between price and quality of the campsite in Italy. The one in Bologna is by far the best in terms of facilities and site, yet is also the cheapest (being relative given the weakness of the Pound again the Euro). Long hot shower and a shave were in order (the latter for me only), and then off to catch the bus into Bologna.

Raining again so I may have been a bit optimistic deploying the solar panel, but it cannot do any harm and will hopefully help top up the secondary battery whilst we are stationary for the next couple of days. We later found out that it “never” rains in Bologna and it was 28°C a week or so ago, so we’re wishing we’d got here a bit sooner.

Despite the rain, which did eventually stop about 1pm, we both liked Bologna - much more as I expected an Italian city to be compared to Genova, with arcaded porticoes,

red-brick palazzi surrounding wide open piazzi

Renaissance towers and gothic churches.

A thoroughly recommended walking tour from the main tourist information centre took us around the main sights, outlined the history of the city and provided insight into the Bolognaise frame of mind. We’ll be back in tomorrow to further explore and maybe make some food purchases, given Bolognas’ gastronomic reputation. SPOT
