Sunday 11th October

Time to leave our expensive campsite near Barcelona and head for France. If we ever need to camp near Barcelona again I think we’ll look to the east of the city, such as the campsite at El Masnou, which is set within sight of the beach, local amenities abound and a there is a train link into the city. Collioure on the Côte Vermeille SPOT was our target (on Peter’s recommendation), going via Girona to check out the narrow cobbled streets of the old town and rather impressive cathedral.

On our way we discovered that if you were ever in need of a prostitute, route NII kilometre marker 687±1km south of Girona is where you’ll find them, sitting on plastic chairs near lay-bys whilst chatting on their mobiles. Sunday is clearly not a day of rest for these ladies.

We bought some cheap Spanish diesel in Port Bou before crossing the border back into France, only to be stuck for an hour in a traffic queue entering Banylus-sur-Mer (which appeared to be the result of ten gendarmes standing around chatting whilst some local beach festival packed away and presumably blocked the road in the process). We did discover the first thing that’s broken on the Land Rover whilst in sitting in the jam though, our squirty has stopped squirting. Must investigate.

It was starting to get dark and our worry was whether we would find a campsite (as the French campsites tend to have barriers, which shut in the evenings at stupidly early hours). The first three sites were all closed for the season, which didn’t bode well, so we decided to head for Perpignan and an Etap style hotel, but as luck would have it we stumbled upon a campsite which didn’t close until 15/10 and didn’t have a barrier, so much to our relief we were in. We hope this closing for the season nonsense doesn’t set a trend for the rest of Europe. SPOT

Tent, awning, table and chairs were all setup in record time, food was on and wine opened. We also discovered free wifi, so prepared blog entries for uploading tomorrow. A Dutch couple in their ex-military 110 are camping nearby, we’re going to have a nose round each other’s vehicles in the morning.
