Monday 12th October

Laura and William are the other Land Rover owners on the site and they’re half way through a two week tour around France. I liked their basics approach to camping, sleeping in the back with minimal kit, enabling them to park up for the night almost anywhere without drawing attention. We on the other hand draw lots of attention even on a campsite whenever we put up the roof tent - it’s as if people have never seen a roof tent before. I think we may have sold William on the idea of a fridge to keep his beer cold though.

Collioure was very pretty if a little windswept, so we pressed on following the coast north.

Lunch was had huddled behind some boulders for shelter from the wind, which had started to blow in earnest last night. SPOT We enjoyed a view over one of the many salt water lagoons that stretch all along the southern French coast before we finally had to leave the sea behind for Nîmes as we were planning on spending Tuesday morning looking around the amphitheatre and other Roman sites.

Upon arriving at the campsite south of Nîmes we thought winter had come as the sun had dropped behind the trees and the wind turned really cold. Out came the puffy jackets, long trousers and socks for the first time since leaving England. Anne was pretty disgruntled about not being able to wander about in a t-shirt at 11pm at night as has been the case for the past few weeks; anyone would think it was October. SPOT
