Tuesday 1st June - Pinnacles to North Point

Having set up camp in the dark we weren’t exactly sure what was around us, other than the beach.

We awoke to the sound of reversing beeps from the gravel trucks that are part of the construction crew for the new Lancelin to Cervantes road, which closely follows the existing 4WD Grey Road (although we couldn’t see the trucks as we had a nice, private spot).  That and an inquisitive kangaroo were the only breakfast interruptions, and after letting the heavy morning dew dry from the tent we returned to the Pinnacles for another look around.

This time we took the 1.2km walking loop through the park, from which we deviated to explore interesting looking clusters of pillars.

Walking is better than driving as new vantage points were afforded, and you appreciate the extent of the formations all the more.

We lunched at Hangover Bay, a short drive from the Pinnacles.  We utilised the free BBQs to toast some muffins, although our peace was broken by a group of international travellers who‘d also decided that the bay would be a good spot for a bite to eat.  Flippin’ tourists.  Beautiful though it was we decided to press north, stopping up the coast in Cervantes for stamps and for groceries at Julian Bay.

In search of another suitable bush camp in the afternoon, we left the tarmac for Sandy Point, although we eventually decided that the track down to North Point looked more promising.

We passed the remains of former fisherman shacks and found several possible campsites.  Getting fussy in our old age we surveyed them for aspect, outlook, privacy and shelter, and eventually selected the best for the night.  We scrambled over the dunes to view the sunset over the bay, and had a glass of rosé as a sundowner before setting up camp for the evening.

The stars have been fairly spectacular the last couple of nights, with clear skies and little light pollution producing a brilliant view of the Milky Way and a myriad of stars filling the sky.  The sound of waves again sent us to sleep, and hopefully the morning sun will welcome us tomorrow. SPOT

  1. Ah, such a shame you couldn't spend more time in Cervantes. I remember it being such a... 'special' place. :)
