As McDonalds in Australia has free Wi-Fi, that was lunch sorted out. You cannot beat a bit of junk food after living on the road for a few weeks, and if you can check your email at the same time all the better.
We’ve managed to tick off a few things on our to do list but most will have to wait until tomorrow when places are open, so we set about some sightseeing instead. Unfortunately the dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point can only be seen during a neap tide, which was mid month, so we had to settle for the concrete casts
and great views back along the famous Cable Beach. SPOT
As luck would have it we have timed our visit for the so called Staircase to the Moon (I cannot help but think it’s called Stairway to Heaven), for which we took up position on Town Beach following an afternoon stroll along Cable Beach.
The Staircase to the Moon occurs during the full moon and is formed by the moon reflecting in the rippled mud flats as it rises, creating the illusion of a staircase leading up to the moon (apparently).
It was a pretty sight, with a large crowd gathered to watch and spend money at the open air market that accompanies the event
(we’re a few dollars lighter as Anne found a nice necklace; technically she found several nice necklaces but luckily only bought one).
Unfortunately we’re on our own for accommodation as Fi and Kane aren’t able to put us up, so we’re at the Pistol Club tonight, slotted in behind a RV and a friendly camper van couple who’ve offered us the use of their water and power. I think we’ll try to see if we can get into a proper caravan park tomorrow as the facilities here are a bit lacking, and we were looking forward to an easy couple of days to sort out ourselves and the Land Rover.
