Tuesday 8th December - Kas to Olympos

Our first warm night camping since entering Turkey, thanks to our southerly location and a nice sea breeze from the Mediterranean.  Brilliant sunshine forced us to don sunglasses as we enjoyed breakfast overlooking the bay.

We filled with diesel near Kas and took advantage of the adjoining mechanic’s facilities to change the Land Rover’s oil and filter for no charge.  Good to get that job done as I’d meant to do it last week.

The main road cut back inland but we detoured down to the little fishing village of Üçagiz to see if we could get a boat out to see the sunken city by the island of Kekova.  On our way down the hill we stopped to give a local guy a lift to the harbour, who turned out to have a boat and took us around the bay, showing us a ruined Byzantine church,

the sunken city (6m underwater due to a series of earthquakes in the 2nd century; unfortunately no columns or fancy mosaics, but still worth the trip),

and back via the Crusader fortress and Lycian tombs at Simena.

After a quick lunch we continued onto Olympos, a former hippie hang out famous for its tree houses, but looking more like a shanty town as we arrived in the failing light.  There had been a flood a few months back, which may account for the river now flowing across the road (no problem for the Land Rover), and the piles of rubble lying around.

We’re in a bungalow as the “tree houses” (actually built on stilts) aren’t heated and have large gaps above the walls (nice in the summer, but not in December).

Breakfast and evening meal are included in the price, so we’ve just enjoyed some superb home cooking by the owner’s mother and a couple of cups of tea.  There is a group of Americans here as well, but you can’t have everything! SPOT
