Tuesday 15th December - Göreme to Kahramanmaras

We were sorry to say bye to Cappadocia, we know we keep saying this but we’ll definitely be back one day as there’s still so much to explore.  Despite the fact it’s not the best time of year to travel inland we decided to do it anyway as we want to go to Nemrut Dagi (statues on a mountain top).  The mountain may be impassable with snow, but it’s worth a try.  As Nemrut Dagi is a bit far to go in one day we decided to head for Kahramanmaras as a stopover for tonight.  The journey was lovely, we passed lots of snow covered mountains and there was also quite a bit of snow covering the higher plateau areas - it reminded us of the Scottish Highlands.

We haven’t been in a big city for a while so it was nice to wander around Kahramanmaras when we arrived.  We had to stock up on water when we got here as it was cold enough to freeze our water system in the Land Rover last night and, when things finally thawed out today, we found lots of plastic-like debris in our water bottles.  We think water froze in the filter, expanded and broke it.  We need to do some investigation, and we do have a spare filter, but having only put about 450 litres through a pretty expensive filter designed for 1900 litres it’s annoying to say the least.  If we do need to change filters we’ll wait until things warm up so we don’t run the risk of this happening again.

Speaking of cold things, Kahramanmaras is apparently famous for its ice cream so we thought it would be rude not to buy some.  It is really nice and creamy, although I’m convinced I can detect a bit of a goat milk taste to it so Mike can have my share (anything a goat produces is evil as far as I’m concerned).

The only place we could find to stay in Kahramanmaras is a hotel in the middle of town, hopefully the Land Rover will be safe parked outside.  We have Turkish TV to watch though, sadly the single English speaking programme on is “Hunting Adventures with Mike Coley” where they are showing how to taxidermy things.  Marvellous.
