After a cold shower (I was so unimpressed I can’t begin to tell you), we left the campsite and took the bridge into the Peloponnese region.
It was a lovely sunny day today, and a good, fast drive compared to the mountain roads of the past few days. We checked out a campsite on the coast at Kourauta (recommended by Sam Watson) but it was shut, so we headed on to Olympia and found a great site pretty much in the town centre, and only a short walk from the ruins themselves. The owners are lovely and friendly and let us use their washing machine as we’re out of pants (again). We’re not using our own “washing machine” enough, we need to get into a routine and ensure we have a plentiful supply of underwear. Let me know if I’m oversharing.
A wander into Olympia in the afternoon (lots of tourist tat about, but a nice town centre) led us to the Museum of Ancient Olympic Games which was pretty good; they have some amazing artefacts. I particularly liked the shields they had to carry in the armour races (why don’t we still have these races in today’s Olympics?), they were huge. As the “shin guards” (can’t remember their proper name, please excuse my ignorance) they also had to wear looked like they’d barely fit a teenage girl (small people in those days), it makes the carrying of those shields all the more impressive. We shall do the ruins themselves tomorrow, I’m expecting great things.
