Friday 6th November – Delphi

Bedding to be washed as the sun was shining so we delayed our walk up to the site of Ancient Delphi, home to the most famous oracle of ancient times, about 2km away. SPOT

The ancient Greeks really knew how to pick an atmospheric spot. Perched on a cliff side overlooking an expansive valley with a sea of olive trees below, Delphi does have a certain “feeling” about it.  The remains are fairly extensive, with the Sacred Way

eading up past the treasuries of each of the city states,

to the Sanctuary of Apollo,

then onto a well preserved theatre,

and finally a stone seated stadium high on the hill side.

and Sanctuary of Athena.

Some reconstruction work has taken place, which adds to the experience, and the museum was the most impressive we have visited, with some amazingly well preserved statues, freezes and artefacts recovered from the site.

Unfortunately our visit was cut short as in off season the museum shuts at 1500, so we had an early return to the campsite, followed by a lazy afternoon and evening.
