The campsite owner gave us directions to take the back way to the coast road south, and we made good progress to Kalamata where we stocked up on fruit and vegetables at the impressive market near the bus station - much cheaper than the supermarkets and the tomatoes and apples we had at lunch were really tasty. SPOT
From Kalamata we headed towards Sparta and the ruins of Mystras, via the Langada Pass over the Taÿgetos mountains. As we climbed through what many consider one of the most stunning routes in Greece (and who are we to disagree?) the temperature fell, not helped by the sun disappearing behind the clouds. At the top of the 1524m pass we stopped at a cafe for a warming cup of hot chocolate in front of the log fire and decided that instead of camping at Mystras tonight we would stay in a guesthouse a couple of kilometres further down the road as their restaurant comes highly recommended. We’ll head off early to complete the remaining 20km to the ruins of Mystras. SPOT
A cosy room with balcony and all the scolding hot water you need for 28 Euros, plus the tastiest homemade sausages for tea, what more could you ask for.
