Saturday 7th November – Delphi to Meteora

A fairly long driving day for us as we headed north west to Meteora.  En-route we paid our respects to King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans who died at the pass of Thermopylae, where they temporarily halted the invading Persian army of Xerxes (said to number over 1 million men).  It wasn’t quite the same as I remembered from the film, but maybe that was because the sea level has fallen since 480 BC.

A stop at a new shopping mall south of Trikala for a “comfort break” had us a bit confused as to where all the shoppers were - had this been the UK on a Saturday afternoon the place would have been packed, with teenage kids hanging out, mothers with children in tow and reluctant partners feigning interest as “she” tried on shoes.  Not in Greece.  The place was virtually deserted and we felt guilty as assistants pounced on us as if we were their first customers of the day (which we probably were).  The Karen Millen shop had some amazingly cheap dresses (28€), but, much to Anne’s disappointment, no bags.  We did buy something during our visit, Anne found me a pair of Camel Active boxer shorts in the outlet section of the mall, reduced from 22€ to 5€ - I suggested modelling them for the blog, but Anne’s not so sure.

After our lone experience at the campsite in Delphi, the one in Meteora was full of camper vans (well, comparatively speaking - there are five).   There was a Swiss couple on their way back home after almost a year on the road with their three children, having been as far as Iran; two British couples (one with a three year old daughter, Poppy) travelling in convoy around Europe for a year; a Dutch couple with three children, four months into a year of travelling (www.hierzynwe.web-log.nl); and Pip and Mac, a Kiwi pair who came over about five years ago and have been alternating work in the UK with travel around Europe (that’s the way to do things). SPOT

After hot showers, our favourite campsite facility is free Wi-Fi, which we spotted on the way in, so we spent a couple of hours checking email, doing some banking stuff and Skyping our parents.

It started to rain as we climbed into bed.
