It never ceases to amaze me what a Land Rover will climb up or descend down at tick over in low first. The track we were on today out to Point Warrender was by far the roughest and steepest to date, taking about an hour to complete the last 8km to reach the sea. We made it in time for lunch, but unfortunately the possible presence of saltwater crocodiles meant that we couldn’t cool off in the sea. I did have a quick face splash after first double checking for any lurking reptiles.
We’d decided to do the 100km loop to Surveyors Pool SPOT Surveyors pool
and onto Point Warrender as we wanted to make it to the coast (we’re not going to go up to Kalumburu). We thought it would be a quick morning trip, then back to the Gibb River Road the way we had come via Drysdale Station for some fuel. We hadn’t quite banked on the poor state of the track, but it made for some exhilarating 4WD driving, and our first glimpse of the ocean through the trees was magnificent.
The sound of a motorcycle announced Ron’s arrival, and he said it was the best riding he had done in Australia. SPOT
It was a beautiful spot,
but we’re trying to save days where possible in order to give ourselves more time to do Cape York, so we decided to head back south and made it as far as the King Edward River for the night. It always seems quicker on the way back. SPOT
