Anne was stabbed today. Admittedly it was self-inflicted as she tried to separate the fused segments of a half price Terry’s Chocolate Orange we’d bought at Coles in Broome. Note to self; in future keep Chocolate Orange in the fridge, not in the back of a 35oC Land Rover; and Anne, chocolate and knives don’t mix.
I fear we may be in danger of being gorged out by the end of our time in Australia. It must be an unwritten rule of the Australian tourist board that every national park needs at least one gorge, although preferably three or more, on which to focus visitor’s attention. Today we added three to our tally, and whilst each was lovely and was a little different we’ve still got a number to see before our time is up.
One good thing about having lots of gorges and associated pools along our route is that they are good for cooling off and washing away the grime that quickly builds up when travelling through the dusty Kimberley. We had a dip at Galvans Gorge in the morning
(after visiting Adcock Gorge) SPOT,
but were a little perturbed by a snake poking its head out of the water as we were swimming to the base of the waterfall. We quickly backed away and kept a watchful eye until it submerged. We figured that it would leave us alone, although in the end we needn’t have worried as we saw our “snake” sunning itself on a rock downstream as we walked back to the car park. SPOT
Our afternoon swim was at Barnett River Gorge, another beautiful site which we had to ourselves, at least for a while. Fruit bats kept a watchful eye from their roost in the trees on the opposite bank as we tried out the swing a previous visitor had set up.
Unfortunately the camera filled its memory card and so the missed the actual water entry, but you get the idea. SPOT
There were some great bush campsites near the gorge, but we wanted to make it to the turnoff for the road up to Kalumburu and Mitchell Falls before night, so we pushed on and are currently camped on the banks of the actual Gibb River enjoying a cool beer from the fridge. SPOT
