As we planned to continue down Caves Road we felt it was rude not to stop and have a look at one more example, so we called into the Caveworks Centre and went down into Lake Cave. As if being stalked, Rose appeared on our tour (with Ryan, a university friend of hers whom we’d bumped into at the pub last night). She’s flying back to Sydney today, but was attempting to extend her holiday as much as possible!
Whilst not the biggest cave in the area, Laake Cave is particularly beautiful, with a floating platform suspended by two columns above the water.
After Lake Cave it was time to leave the tarmac and we took a 4WD trail through Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Parts were quite overgrown and Anne had to get out and hold back the odd branch in order for us to squeeze under, but the track wasn’t that technical.
Anne also saw her first live kangaroo, which hoped along the track in front of us for three or four jumps before disappearing into the undergrowth.
We took a detour down to the coast between Cape Freycinet and North Point, and were slightly surprised to see another 4WD parked up overlooking the surf, but they soon drove off to leave us alone to enjoy the solitude and another deserted beach.
We set up the tent and awning as squally showers kept blowing in from the sea, although for future reference we need to look out for more sheltered camping locations as the wind was so strong that it actually folded back the tent on itself. We didn’t realise for a while as we were preparing dinner in the lee side of the vehicle under the awning, and the middle of the mattress got drenched as it was exposed to the rain. Other than a slightly soggy night ahead there was no damage done, and we battened down the flysheet to stop it taking off again. SPOT
