We almost made it all the way through Greece by motorway, but had to make two small detours in the end. We tried to get back on the motorway outside Xanthi but for some reason a 20km section was shut; there was no sign of farmers so it was either for repairs or has yet to be completed (it’s marked as under construction on our map). The second detour was about 100km east of Thessaloniki where a road from the Bulgarian border joins the motorway, and this time the closure was due to a blockade by tractors. Fortunately there was no traffic jam and we just continued on normal roads for less than an hour before we rejoined the motorway for the rest of the journey.
A single toll of 2€ must make the Greek motorways one of the cheapest in Europe, but we did pass several toll booths waiting to be put into service sometime in the future.
We encountered light snow as we crossed the mountains near to our final destination of Igoumenitsa, however this gave way to sunshine as we descended to sea level. In town we collected our tickets from the port and filled with diesel before checking into a small hotel for some sleep - we need to be up early tomorrow as the ferry leaves at 0800.
