Monday 11th January - Feynan Lodge

We had a nice breakfast with some unusual additions including stewed apple with cinnamon, some chalk like nut based blocks (bit weird), the famous cooked fava beans and dates. We were nicely fortified for our day walking up the wadi.

Near the lodge are a few Bedouin tents, but as you climb all you pass are the goat herders who take out their flocks each day to graze on the meagre vegetation before returning in the evening to secure their animals for the night. We had several invites for Bedouin tea, but we got the feeling that they would expect something in return as they seem a bit tourist savvy around here, especially as their stock reply after we graciously declined was that they were hungry and could they have our bananas (which were poking out the top of Anne’s rucksack) - we didn’t part with them.

At times we were walking up the dry river bed, although there were pockets of greenery where water must be lying close to the surface, and at other times we took to the goat tracks.

We made it to the base of the really steep climb out of the wadi by lunch, having ascended some 1000m, but this was as far as we had planned to go. You can continue up to the plateau and stay in the National Park guesthouse at the top before returning the next day, but we needed to get back to Feynan before darkness so headed back down after our picnic. SPOT

Returning to the lodge in the late afternoon sun gave us that tired leg, glowing face feeling, and we collapsed on the bed with an ice cold drink out of the Land Rover’s fridge, pleased that we’d done something more energetic than looking at Roman ruins.
