Friday 20th August - Kakadu National Park - Jim Jim Falls to Kambolgie Campsite

Today we tried to remain in the water as much as possible to keep cool as, despite the broken cloud giving temporary respite from the sun, we’ve both been rather warm.  Anne’s also fighting off some sort of infection as she has swollen glands in her neck - maybe a reaction to all the mosquito bites, and we’re down to our last antihistamine.  So we took things easy, forgoing our normal desire to climb to each and every lookout and instead sought out Maguk and Gunlom plunge pools.

It seems that all the best bits of Kakadu are at the end of gravel 4WD tracks, which also helps to keep the number of other people down.  The pool below Maguk falls was our favourite, a deep blue and surprisingly warm,

although swimming at Gunlom in the late afternoon sun was a good way to end our time in the park.  It would be an interesting contrast to see all these waterfalls in the wet, which locals think will be early this year as it’s hotter than normal and cloud this time of year is unusual.

The Yellow Water wetlands was our morning stop, and very pretty it was too.
