Friday 6th August - Murray Downs Road to Stuart Highway (Bonney Well Rest Area)

That least welcome of visitors foiled our plan for an early stop by the Frew River in Davenport National Park.  We'd just completed the alternative route into the park along a great 4WD track over the Davenport Range,

selected a nice secluded spot along the river bank, collected our firewood, the table and chairs were out and we were about to put up the roof tent when the flies found us.

We'd been warned about the NT flies, but because of the cold weather we'd not been bothered by them around Alice Springs and Uluru.  Maybe it's because we're travelling through cattle country or the fact that it's been warmer and sunny during the day, but whatever the reason the flies were out in force.  As they weren't conducive to an afternoon's rest and relaxation, we decided to pack up and push on to the Devil's Marbles, still some 180km away.

We won the race with the sun and arrived to catch the Marbles in all their glowing glory.

There are far more of the weathered granite boulders than we expected, spreading out several hundred meters across the landscape and ranging from an individual rock to outcrops tens of metres high.

It's a sacred Aboriginal meeting place with many associated Dreamtime stories, and after experiencing their strangeness as the sun descended below the horizon you can understand why.

Anne likened them to the Pinnacles, but less pointy. SPOT
